energy-efficient-improvementsWould you like to make energy efficient improvements to your home, but don’t have a lot of money available to get the job done? The State of Massachusetts is offering the HEAT Loan Program to customers, providing them with a unique opportunity to take advantage of a 0% loan from participating lenders that can be used to help install qualified energy efficient improvements in their homes.

Depending on the utility and lender that you use, the HEAT Loan Program is being offered in loans up to as much as $25,000 for qualified customers with terms of up to 7 years. To qualify, customers must own a one-to-four family residence, obtain a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment and install one of the qualified energy efficient measures recommended by a Mass Save representative.

What Improvements Qualify?

Currently, customers in the State of Massachusetts can potentially qualify for the HEAT Loan Program if they make energy efficient improvements in the following areas:

  • attic, basement and wall insulation
  • central air conditioning or air source heat pumps
  • ductless mini split heat pumps
  • ENERGY STAR qualified replacement windows
  • high efficiency domestic hot water systems
  • high efficiency heating systems
  • 7-day digital and wi-fi thermostats
  • solar hot water systems

What Do I Need to Do to Apply?

Customers must sign up to receive a Home Energy Assessment from a vendor that is authorized by the Mass Save program. Fisher & Rocha, Inc. provides many of the energy efficient improvements approved in the HEAT Loan Program, including remodeling, restorations, roofing, finished basements, windows and more. Speak with a Fisher & Rocha, Inc. representative to find out all of the energy efficient improvements available through their professional residential construction and remodeling service. Call today at 508-758-6738.

For the Home Energy Assessment, a representative from Mass Save will visit your residence and assess your energy efficient improvement needs to determine what improvements would be eligible for financing under the HEAT Loan Program. During the assessment, the representative will provide a HEAT Loan Intake Form as well as any other applicable documentation required to apply for the Mass Save program. Call Mass Save toll free at 1-866-527-7283 to schedule a no-cost home energy assessment to determine eligibility for this program.

Submit your signed HEAT Loan Intake Form and a final, signed quote from Fisher & Rocha, Inc. Your application will be reviewed and, if approved, you will receive a HEAT Loan Authorization Form so you can apply for a loan through a Participating Lender. If you are approved for a loan, you can then have the work completed, sign the check over to your contractor for payment. Once the work is finished, contact your Mass Save HEAT Loan Administrator for a final verification inspection. If there are any applicable rebates for the energy efficient improvements that you had installed, you can complete them at this time.

How is the HEAT Loan Program Funded?

The HEAT Loan Program is funded by the following programs in the State of Massachusetts: National Grid, NSTAR, Western Massachusetts Electric Company, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, Unitil (MA), New England Gas and Cape Light Compact. Each program administrator that participates in the HEAT Loan Program buys down the interest on the HEAT Loan, which is what makes the 0% loan available to the customer.

What about Multifamily Complex Condo Owners?

If you own a multifamily complex condominium property in the State of Massachusetts that has individually metered electric and natural gas, you are eligible to participate in the Mass Save HEAT Loan Program. Condo owners will still require a Home Energy Assessment, but also must have participated in the Multifamily Retrofit Program, either in the past of present.

Contact a Mass Save representative or work with your Home Performance Contractor to find out more about eligibility requirements for multifamily complex condo owners. You can also find out more about details on qualified energy efficient upgrades from these sources.
